Strategic Review
At its February 1998 meeting, the research group committee discussed the strategic review document at length and made a series of decisions about the future programme and governance of the group. At the heart of the proposals was a suggestion that all committee members should have specific tasks and that the group should build on its activities.
It was agreed:
- that each committee member have specific tasks and responsibilities agreed by committee and subject to periodic review;
- that the June seminar become an annual event and to appoint a seminar organiser;
- to organise undergraduate conferences annually and to appoint two undergraduate conference organisers;
- to organise special conferences every September and to co-opt organisers if not already committee members;
- to continue to sponsor an annual postgraduate symposium organised by postgraduate members;
- to develop a set of pages on the web site devoted to book reviews and to appoint a book review editor;
- to continue to develop the mailbase list;
- to develop a working paper series, based on conference contributions in EGRG sessions as well as other papers proposed by members, to appoint a working paper editor, and to deliver these on paper and via the web;
- to develop the postgraduate courses web page further;
- to develop a web page which introduces the current research of members to potentially interested postgraduates and others;
- to appoint a European network officer to develop links with economic geographers in continental Europe;
- to maintain the momentum in developing practical links with economic geographers in North America, Australia and New Zealand;
- that further investigation of the ways in which economic-geographical research can contribute to policy debates be carried out, and to appoint a policy officer; and
- that the members and officers of the Research Group continue to play a constructive and active part in the life of the RGS.
